By now it’s fairly safe to assume that everyone who is even slightly interested in technology has heard about the proposed Internet Filtering laws in Australia. There are many reasons why this will not work. The main problem appears to be making the broader, less tech-savvy people of Australia aware of this issue & the many flaws in the proposed system.
The EFA has started an awesome new campaign with the aim of raising awareness of this issue within the general population. It appears to be working and has been featured on sites such as ZDNet, Gizmodo, IT Wire, iT News, The Australian & many, many others.
This different approach by the EFA aims to raise awareness of this issue to a greater percentage of the population, not just the tech-savvy. The current internet filtering proposal can be best summarised in the following quote by EFA Chairman Colin Jacobs.
“The Government took this policy to the last election as a ‘cyber-safety’ tool to help parents, but it’s since changed into something completely different. Not only will the filter not protect children, it might give parents a false sense of security and actually lessen the supervision kids get online.”
